He came to the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center in 1990 as a fishery research biologist. His research concerned mainly habitat associations of riverine fishes, effects of flow modifications on river backwaters, and modeling approaches for monitoring and management of large rivers. He was appointed Chief of the Aquatic Sciences Branch in 2001 and the Long Term Resource Monitoring Branch in 2007. Recently, Barry's work has focused on the Center's partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for monitoring and rehabilitation programs on the Upper Mississippi River System, mainly through management of the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program and serving as co-chairperson for the Science Panel of the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program. In addition, he directed the Center's involvement with the EPA's Great Rivers Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program and served as liaison to the National Research Council Committee on "River Science in the U.S. Geological Survey." He has participated in international projects on river science in Russia, Brazil, and China.
